Above the Fold & Don't Look at the Fat Lady
by Topher Payne
directed by DeWayne Morgan
extended through May 15th!!
Above the Fold: When one moment in your life captures the nation's attention, what happens when the reporters are long-gone and the cameras have moved on to the next story? Above the Fold tells the tales of people who were on the periphery of these events: the stylist hired to prepare a woman in a persistent vegetative state for her TV debut; the pizza parlor co-workers of a high school shooter; a woman who lost a plastic surgery beauty pageant; and a boy who never went public about his encounter with a pop star known for his bizarre behaviors.
Don't Look at the Fat Lady: Meet Gloria Dickey, a delightful storyteller and observer of pop culture. Gloria once dreamed of opening her own "kinderkennel," a day care facility for children and their pets. But that was before the freak accident, which led to her being confined to the sofa in her living room duing her convalescence. Her weight ballooned to more than five hundred pounds, and now it's been six years since she left the sofa. Inspired by the true story of a Florida woman who "became her couch," Gloria attempts to answer the most common question about her life: How did this happen? In doing so, she shares her thoughts on God, love, family, Katie Couric, the Sex and the City finale, and a nation that loves food, but is terrified of fat.
The Perfect Arrangement
by Topher Payne
directed by Barbara Cole Uterhardt
only one performance left at 8pm on Friday, May 9th!!
Inspired by the "lavender scare" of th early 1950's, in which hundreds of Americans were fired from government jobs amid accusations of 'moral corruption' -- an official euphemism for homosexuality. "Perfect Arrangement introduces us to the U.S. Department of State employees assigned to develop the criteria for identifying and removing these security risks: Director of Personnel Bob Martindale and his secretary, Norma Baxter. Unbeknownst to the Department, Bob and Norma are themselves closeted – they've married each other's partners, Jim and Millie, as a cover. In order to maintain the facade for visitors, the Martindales and the Baxters have created lives as perfect as a 50s sitcom -- right down to the corny jokes and occassional product placements. But when an employee discovers their secret and threatens exposure, the group discovers how dificult maintaining the illusion can be.
